Universal Nutrition has been manufacturing dietary and sports supplements for more than 20 years. They offer products in a wide variety of categories and last year were nominated for a number of awards in the Bodybuilding.com Supplement Awards. These awards recognize the best products available in the sports supplement industry. Universal Nutrition were successful in two categories – Animal Pak won the best multivitamin, while Animal Flex won best joint supplement.

These are only a couple of the products in the Animal line. Others include an essential fatty acid supplement and products to increase muscle strength and performance.

Universal Nutrition also have sports supplements such as amino acid, and vitamin and mineral supplements. There is also a range of protein powders, as well as weight gain powders.

As you’d expect, there’s also a range of weight loss products, including fat and carb blockers, green tea capsules, and shakes that can increase metabolism and burn fat. Energy-boosting supplements are another line.

There are also nutrition bars available, including diet and protein options. Then there’s the more general nutritional supplements such as various vitamins, ginkgo biloba and joint support products.

These are just some of the vast range of products manufactured by Universal Nutrition. Having been nominated for so many awards, they must be doing something right.

White willow bark has traditionally been used as an analgesic, dating back to around 400BC. Back then, it was mainly used to reduce pain, fever and inflammation.

The anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects of white willow bark are due to the presence of salicin. Salicin was identified in the 1800s but was expensive to extract so a synthetic compound, salicylic acid, was produced. This, however, was too harsh on the stomach so a milder version called acetylsalicylic acid was derived. Acetylsalicylic acid is more commonly known as aspirin.

As white willow bark is chemically very similar to aspirin, it is used to treat the same sorts of complaints – that is, pain, inflammation and fever. It also has similar side effects. Therefore, if you have a sensitivity to aspirin, you should not take white willow bark.

White willow bark is sometimes added to weight loss supplements. It’s believed that it can have synergistic effects when combined with other compounds such as ephedra and caffeine, increasing the metabolism and enhancing the fat burning properties of these two substances. However, there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of scientific evidence to back up this claim.

If you’re on any sort of medication and are thinking of taking a weight loss supplement containing white willow bark, if would be advisable to check with your doctor first because, as is the case with aspirin, it can have negative interactions with other drugs.

VPX Sports is a manufacturer of supplements for sports performance, body building, weight and fat loss, sex drive, and power and strength. Whether you’re a novice or a serious athlete, they have products that may be suitable for you.

For fat loss and energy, VPX has a series of products called Redline. These products stimulate a “shivering response”. When you shiver your body releases fat to try to increase your body temperature. Redline also has ingredients to help you burn fat. The products are available in both capsule and ready-to-drink forms. One product, called Redline Princess is designed specifically for women.

Among VPX’s muscle building range is the Zero Impact line. Zero Impact products combine protein and essential fatty acids and, in some products, also carbohydrates. They are available as shakes or bars.

There are also products designed to be used as pre- and post-workout supplements. The pre-workout range includes nitric oxide boosting supplements, while in the post-workout range there are products containing creatine and glutamine.

In the health support and libido range, VPX has a fiber supplement, a glucosamine cream and a testosterone booster.

Whether you’re looking to increase your fat loss, build more and stronger muscle or perform better at your favorite sport, there could be VPX supplement that will suit your needs.

Probably one of the biggest differences between whey protein and soy protein is their source. Whey protein is an animal product, extracted from the watery substance that’s left over from cheese production. Therefore, it is unsuitable for anyone with allergies to dairy products or who is lactose intolerant. It also wouldn’t be suitable for vegans.

Soy protein, on the other hand, is a plant product, extracted from the soybean. This would make it suitable for vegans but not for people with soy allergies, which is a fairly common allergy.

So if you don’t have any dietary problems with either protein type, which one wins the whey vs. soy protein fight on a quality level?

There are a few different systems in place to measure protein quality. Digestibility is measured using a protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (or PDCAAS). Officially, the highest score possible is 1.0. Both whey and soy proteins rate at 1.0, meaning they are both highly digestible. Unofficially though, whey protein has scored 1.14 so it’s probably just that little bit better.

Whey protein also seems to score just a little better in other quality tests. However, soy protein does have the advantage of helping to reduce cholesterol levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

As far as amino acids go, these two types of protein are pretty much on a par; they both provide good quantities of all the essential amino acids.

In the end, the answer to the whey vs. soy protein question may just come down to personal preference. Both are very good, high-quality protein sources, with whey protein maybe coming in just slightly better than soy.

If you’re really into bodybuilding – and I mean really into it – then Muscle Asylum Project might have the sort of supplements you’d be interested in. By their own admission, they manufacture products for people who are totally obsessed with building huge, ripped muscle. Their website says that they aim to “transform average men into beasts, and beasts into freaks of nature”.

Muscle Asylum Project have created a delivery system called Rapid Wave Pulse Technology, which revolutionizes the way that nutrients are transported throughout the body. They have also discovered research on an anabolic compound which, if used in a certain way, has the ability to stimulate satellite cells to produce new muscle tissue.

Muscle Asylum Project have searched the world to find compounds to include in their supplements, including one called gamma-butyrobetaine eicosanoate (or GBB) which has extremely potent vasodilation properties.

Specifically, Muscle Asylum Project’s products include nitric oxide supplements for increased muscle growth, a post-workout recovery drink, a fat burner, and high-potency whey protein and creatine supplements.

Muscle Asylum Project realize that their products aren’t going to appeal to everyone. They’re only for those who are extremely serious about getting the absolute maximum muscle growth imaginable.

Do you hear the term “carbohydrate” and immediately think of something that’s bad for you and that you should avoid as much as possible? You don’t need to think of carbohydrates as the enemy. All carbohydrates are not created equal.

Carbohydrates occur in two different forms – either simple or complex. Simple carbohydrates are sugars like glucose or fructose. These are the sorts of carbohydrates that you shouldn’t eat too much of.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, are carbohydrates that are good for you. We all need to ensure that we eat plenty of complex carbohydrates so that our bodies can produce energy to drive our metabolisms.

Foods containing complex carbohydrates include starchy foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, and wholemeal and wholegrain breads. Vegetables and fruits also contain complex carbohydrates, as do pulses such as beans, peas and lentils.

So why should we eat a lot of complex carbohydrates and not too much of the simple sugars? Simple sugars have no real nutritional value; they just provide a short energy boost. When you eat, your body releases insulin to deal with the sugars you’ve ingested. Simple sugars are quickly cleared from your bloodstream by the insulin, meaning that they only provide energy for a short time. If you eat a lot of simple sugars throughout the day, your blood glucose and insulin levels will go through a continual series of peaks and troughs.

Complex carbohydrates are digested much more slowly. This means that they will provide an energy source for a much longer period. Your blood glucose and insulin levels will stay at more even levels throughout the day, with the result that you’ll have enough energy to sustain you.

There’s also several diet supplements and fat-burning products in Optimum Nutrition’s range. These include L-carnitine, an amino acid which helps to transport fat to muscles so it can be burned for energy, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which has been shown to help reduce fat.

Then there’s your everyday vitamins and minerals, including men’s, women’s and sport multiples, as well as a B complex and C combination.

Specialty products include fish oil, flaxseed oil, which is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and stevia, a natural sweetener.

Finally, there’s Optimum Nutrition’s strength and recovery range which includes creatine, glutamine and BCAA (branched chain amino acid) supplements. Creatine is a substance used by skeletal muscles as a source of energy, while glutamine is involved in protein synthesis and is believed to help build muscle tissue.

According to Optimum Nutrition’s website, all of their products are manufactured in-house, giving them complete control over the manufacturing process. Raw materials are tested for quality by independent laboratories and all products are made using strict quality controls.

Green tea extract is, these days, a popular ingredient in weight loss products. This is because studies have shown that green tea acts as a metabolic stimulant.

Green tea, as do other teas, contains caffeine. Maybe you’d think that it’s reasonable to assume that it’s the caffeine component that boosts the metabolism. However, green tea contains catechin polyphenols and it’s believed to be these compounds which are mainly responsible for the increase in metabolism. Catechin polyphenols are thermogenic, which means that they increase the rate at which the body burns calories.

In addition to this metabolic boost, studies conducted by two universities have also indicated that green tea extract will increase the rate at which fat is oxidized and that it improves glucose tolerance.

When used in weight loss supplements, green tea extract is often combined with caffeine. Caffeine, as most of us probably know, is a stimulant that increases heart rate, making us more alert. There are suggestions that the combination of these two substances has a synergistic effect; that is, that the combination is more effective than either ingredient is on its own.

While using a natural product such as green tea extract for weight loss sounds like a healthy alternative, it is advisable to check what other ingredients are in the supplements. As previously mentioned, many contain caffeine. Some also contain other stimulants so it’s not a bad idea to find out just what the ingredients do. And if you decide on a weight loss supplement that contains caffeine as well as green tea extract, it’s advisable to limit your intake of caffeine from other sources, such as coffee, cola and energy drinks.

Designed for serious bodybuilders, Arson by Muscle Asylum Project is a thermogenic product offering rapid fat burning results. Thermogenesis is the production of heat in the body due to metabolic processes. Some people have reported feeling the heat generated by Arson after taking just a single dose.

Containing a number of fat-burning ingredients including green tea and caffeine, Arson was shown in one study to increase the oxidation of fat by up to 35% in 24 hours. Arson works by boosting your levels of noradrenaline, the main fat-burning hormone in your body, by up to 40%. It also blocks alpha-2 receptors which has the effect of telling your body to keep burning fat for longer. Arson incorporates Rapid Wave Pulse Technology, a nutrient transport system that quickly delivers the active ingredients to your fat cells for rapid fat reduction.

If you do an internet search, you can find a number of comments about Arson from people who have tried it. Most comments are quite positive though, as you’d expect for any supplement, there are also reports of it having little effect in some who’ve tried it, and some people even reported feeling ill on it. Arson is not designed for the average person but more for the hardcore bodybuilder, so it might be a good idea to do a bit of homework before deciding to take Arson by Muscle Asylum Project to ensure that it’s suitable for you. Of course, if you have any health problems or are on any medication you should certainly consult your doctor.

So you’re about to embark on a fitness program. Or maybe you already work out but don’t seem to be getting anywhere on your own. Perhaps you should consider working with a personal trainer.

Personal trainers aren’t just for the serious athlete. They’re for anybody wanting to get the most out of their fitness training. A personal trainer can look at your current level of fitness, your goals and your lifestyle and design a program specifically for you.

Whether you want to be able to run a marathon or just want to feel better within, and about, yourself, a personal trainer can help. Not only will he or she devise a program to suit you, they will ensure that you get the most you can out of it.

A personal trainer will get you to use a heart rate monitor while you’re working out so that they can set you a program that will have you working at your optimal level. This will help you to progress faster towards your goals. And as you do progress, your trainer can adjust your program so that it keeps on challenging you.

Working with a personal trainer can also help to keep you motivated. If you’re working on your own it’s easy to get a bit lazy at times. You had a hard day and just don’t really feel like hitting the road or gym or whatever today. It won’t matter. No one will know. If you have a trainer, they will know. So not only can a personal trainer help you out with the physical side of your fitness program, they can help you to stay focused mentally as well.
