Lower Your Cancer Risk by Walking

With the onset of the 21st century, cancer has spread its ugly tentacles across all age groups. Unhealthy diet, erratic lifestyle, and high stress levels are some of the key factors setting off the cancer cell growth. On the other hand, healthy diet and regular exercising are quite instrumental in keeping you fit and away from cancer to quite a degree. Brisk walking for at least 30 minutes a day is believed to smother cancer growth in the body. Let alone the desirable personality quotient attached to exercising, brisk walking miraculously hinders cancer onset and aggravation.

Normal weight, a frequently misinterpreted word, is not the concept of a size zero body, instead it is the optimally stable body weight when you are physically active and are on a consistent & balanced nutritional diet. According to a study, the accumulation of fat around your waistline is the key to inviting diseases, including cancer, hypertension, etc. This fat accumulation is attributed to the fact that as we age, our body loses up to a pound of muscles a year and gains them back as fat. Now, fat burns fewer calories than the muscles do, thereby slowing down your metabolism, and resulting in weight gain. Here, brisk walking after dinner comes as a redeemer for all aliments. The best part is that along with slimming and toning your body, walking cuts down breast cancer risk by 30 to 40 percent!

Therefore, it high time we slip into our walking gear and take charge of our health’s destiny.

Sleep Well To Stay Healthy

Life, on its never ending ‘Rat Race,’ has undeniably become hectic and chaotic. Managing and squeezing out time for one’s health is becoming mandatory, while also turning tricky. Health consciousness, strict diets, and fitness schedules are in vogue like never before. Along with these, adequate sleep is one of the most vital elements in harmonizing sound health.

Here are some ill effects of sleeping less:
Dull Brain. Less sleep affects the alertness of the brain. An exerted and tired brain processes information slowly and stalls reaction time.

Poor Concentration & Mind-Body Co-ordination. Concentration and mental-physical coordination also suffer due to sleep deprivation.

Insomnia. Inadequate sleep may also cause or aggravate insomnia. Insomnia or a lack of sleep is one of the most distressing psychological disorders known to humanity.

The benefits of sleeping well include:
Healthy Brain. Sleeping well relaxes brain. A relaxed brain means an alert brain and an alert brain in turn means efficiency, which is what we ultimately strive for.

Weight Loss. A sound eight hours log, on an average, is requisite even in weight reduction. According to a study, a lack of sleep is an appetite booster. Sleep encourages your body to produce Leptin hormone (responsible for a sense of fullness), while hampering the release of hunger stimulating hormone, Ghrelin.

Appetite Control. Sleep also helps alleviate appetite inducing factors, anxiety, and depression, thereby keeping a check on emotional eating.

Psycho-mental Stability. A relaxed brain suppresses anxiety and depression. This helps keep you sane and reasonable, the attributes that are especially vital for decision-making.

What Men Need to Know About a Vasectomy

Birth control methods for males have taken a leap forward with the procedure of isolating the Vas deferens, a process called Vasectomy. It is a simple surgical procedure that prevents sperms from reaching the seminal fluid. Vasectomy is generally conducted under the influence of local anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure.

There are a few side effects, however, of this quite sought out birth control procedure, ranging from minor to major ones. The minor side effects include:
•    Discomfort post surgery - (cold compress might do the trick of relieving it, any strenuous activity should be avoided)
•    Light swelling and bruising at the spot - (cold compress is a remedy)
•    Granulomas (lump/mass formation) and Epididymitis (inflammation) -    Especially in men indulging in strenuous jobs immediately after the surgery. Cold compress and a combination of anti-inflammatory drugs are often quite effective against such complaints.

The major side effects may be:
•    Erectile Dysfunction
•    Failure in the prevention of pregnancy
•    Increased chances of prostate cancer

Vasectomy is a minor surgery having several side effects. Quite a number of these “side effects” though, are more psychological in nature, rooted to the feeling of “losing one’s masculinity.” The fact, however, is that just some days of rest and an open mind do the trick.

The Healthy Miracles of Soups & Salads

Though, often consumed for taste & as appetizers, without much health purview, soups, & salads ‘complete’ a healthy meal.

Fitness Benefits of Soups & Salads:
•    Nutritious. Being rich in nutrients, soups & salads help fill the nutrition gaps, if any, of the subsequent main course meal. Else, they simply supplement the nutrients in the body.
•    Heart Friendly. Soups & salads boost the heart’s health, thereby helping keep several heart diseases at bay.
•    Weight Control. Salads & soups give you a feeling of fullness, thereby reducing your appetite. As a result, you eat less, while the appetizers supplement your body for the nutrients. Therefore, soups & salads are instrumental in controlling fat & obesity.
•    Digestion Boost. Soups & salads help optimize the digestion and the assimilation of nutrients in the body.

How to Choose Proper Soups & Salads: One has to be very careful while choosing salads & soups, as some of them, instead of controlling fat & calories, may be unhealthy for consumption. Take care that your appetizers and meals are free of processed cheese, creams, and saturated fats, while being rich in vitamins, minerals, & fibers.
•    Salads. A healthy salad usually includes broccoli, lettuce, celery, cucumber, beans, nuts, turkey breast, low fat cheese, tuna, fruits, tomato, tofu, carrots, radish, etc., whereas, the dressings (mayonnaise, ranch, thousand island, French, & bleu), processed cheese, meats, eggs, olives, & croutons are fatty.
•    Soups. Consommé, gazpacho (Vitamin C rich), miso, non-cream vegetable, carrot & tomato (Antioxidants rich), and Peas & lentils/bean soups (minerals, Vitamin B, & protein rich) are considered healthy, while New England clam chowder, broccoli cheddar, cream-based vegetables, sausages & vegetables, and French onion soups are considered unhealthy, due to their high fat & calories levels.

The Importance of Dietary Iron

Iron is a metal element, found in abundance on our planet, though is present in quite small quantity in our body.

Iron is important for our body, owing to the following reasons:
•    Metabolism. Iron is necessary for the normal execution of several metabolic activities of our body.
•    Oxygen Transport. When iron combines itself with a protein molecule, “Globin,”, then it is called Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is packed inside our red blood cells (RBCs) and transports oxygen throughout the body for the respiration process at the tissues level.

•    Enzymes Production. Some other iron-protein complexes in the body are enzymes, such as peroxidase and cyctochrome enzymes, which are important energy production systems present within the muscle fibers.

The deficiency of iron in the body may lead to several serious conditions, such as anemia, fatigue, exhaustion, lousiness, paleness, breathlessness, attention deficit disorder, and restless legs syndrome.

Dietary iron is amply found in lean red meat (beef), dry fruits (raisins), egg yolk, liver, leafy & green vegetables (lettuce, mustard leaves, & spinach), nuts & beans (red kidney beans), Fibers (wheat bran), blackstrap molasses, sea food (clams), and Vitamin-C rich fruits & vegetables, such as tomato, kale, oranges. In addition, the studies have shown that Vitamin-C optimizes iron absorption levels in the body.

All said and done the bottom line remains that eat only the required amount of iron. Do not overdo it. The daily consumption of iron is stipulated at 15mg for all those below the age of fifty, 10mg for all those beyond the age, and 30mg for pregnant women.

Don’t Gain Any Weight This Holiday Season

Many people dread the holiday weight gain that they know is inevitable.  Did you know you could lose weight eating Christmas cookies and other delicious treats?  I know you are thinking that isn’t possible, though is if we change how we eat.  The average American eats 3 meals a day or less which is one the #1 factors that leads to obesity, not what you eat.  Your metabolism wants 5 small meals during the day, and that is what makes your body burn fat for energy.

This holiday if you start eating five small meals you will lose weight.  What lose weight during the holidays; that is correct.  Keep in mind I said small meals.  If you want to have a cookie have a cookie.  Just one cookie or two depending on the size can count as a small meal.  Two cookies is probably the same calories as a good small meal.  The cookies deliver no nutritional value though if you keep to your small amounts you will not ruin your metabolism.

When you eat 5 small meals you lose the ability to overeat so this holiday season ruin Christmas dinner by having a small snack so you eat a small meal of your favorite fixings at dinner.

What Happens When You Get Too Little Protein in Your Diet

Proteins are composed of long chain like forms of amino acids. Amino acids are basic and fundamental to life. As a chemical compound, it is made of amine and carbonyl functional groups. To put it simply, they are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen and on some rare occasions, sulfur. These four or five materials build themselves into various chain-like structures and form different types of protein. Protein is the life line of human health.

Human cells, muscle tissue, and the organs of the body are made up of protein. Long chains of amino acids are structured to make different types of proteins. There are 22 types of amino acids and the human body needs all of them to be healthy.

Different types of proteins in our body execute different body functions. Our body’s strength, its flexibility and elasticity are taken care of by a protein called collagen, and our hair and skin are composed of the same protein.

Proteins we consume through food are broken down into amino acids in the process of digestion and absorbed by the body only to be rebuilt into different types of proteins that are the requirement of the body. There are twenty two kinds of amino acids essential for the human body. And in that 14 are produced by the body and the remaining 8 are to be obtained though food.
